The CARERS Program for Caregivers (Coaching, Advocacy, Respite, Emotion, Relationship, & Simulation): The 10-week CARERS program offers family caregivers a unique combination of practical, hands-on skills training and emotional support in a therapeutic group setting. Family caregivers, guided by expert clinical coaches, will learn how to understand and manage emotional stress and learn new skills to manage the challenges they encounter in caring for their family member with Alzheimers disease and related dementias at home. A concurrent arts-based group is available for the family member with dementia to attend during the 10 week program for caregivers. This concurrent program offers respite for the caregiver if needed, and cognitive and interpersonal engagement for the person with dementia.
This CARERS program consists of:
– Intake: pre-program assessment with group facilitators.
– 10 Week Program: Week 1 to 4: Group education and use of problem solving therapy to address specific problems defined by participants; Week 5 to 10: Skills training using simulation, role play, and expert coaching to address specific challenges defined by participants.
– Monthly 1 hour maintenance group sessions offered for one year following the 10 week CARERS group.
