Full study title: Bright Mind: Measuring Brain Activity to Predict Cognitive Health in Aging

What is the study about?

This study looks at how the brain’s electrical signals can be used to improve the early detection of Alzheimer’s disease. Early detection of brain changes is crucial to prevent cognitive decline and dementia. This study uses electroencephalography (EEG) to record the brain’s electrical signals during
simple tasks, with the hope of validating a measure that can improve early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.

Eligibility – Who can participate?

We are looking for individuals who:
● Are 60 – 85 years old
● Have normal vision (with visual aids, if needed)
● Have no prior neurological conditions, memory impairment, and no serious health issues.
● May or may not have noticed changes in memory or thinking in the past two years.

Time requirement

● Baseline visit: Visit 1 involves questionnaires, memory and thinking tasks, and an EEG test, taking 3.5 hours. One to two weeks later, Visit 2 involves a repeat of the EEG test only (1-1.5h).

● 6-months follow-up visit involves the EEG test and questionnaires and lasts 1.5 hours.

● 18-months follow-up visit involves questionnaires, memory and thinking tasks, and the EEG test and lasts 3.5 hours.

● A study partner who has known the participant for at least five years, is required at the baseline and 18-month follow-up visits to complete two brief questionnaires.

Compensation/reimbursement: In appreciation of your time and effort, we will provide the following compensation to cover the incidental costs related to participating in this study: $60 for Visit 1, $25 for Visit 2, $30 for 6 months
follow-up, and $60 for 18 months follow-up. In addition, we will cover your parking fees at Baycrest or reimburse your TTC fare, whichever is applicable for you.
